Android - Cloud Messaging API connection deprecated

Hi, is there a way to connect Airship to FCM using alternative means than using server keys in the Android push provider settings in the Go dashboard?

As currently I am getting warnings from Google saying that this method is now deprecated and set to be removed in June 2024

  • Hello,

At the moment on the legacy api key is available for using FCM in Airship. We are working on implementing the new API and authentication requirements and will have updates in the coming months. The newer authentication feature will be available before it is removed in June 24'

Once released there may be some additional work your team needs to do to provide updated credentials to the Airship UI, but we will make sure to give you plenty of time to complete that work once we have everything ready on our end.

    Thank you,

  • The Android Cloud Messaging (GCM) API connection has been deprecated, signaling a shift towards more modern alternatives for push notification delivery. With this change, developers are encouraged to migrate their applications to Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), the successor to GCM. FCM offers enhanced features, better performance, and broader platform support, ensuring seamless communication between server and client devices. While this transition may require updates to existing codebases, it opens up opportunities for improved functionality and reliability. Stay informed about platform updates and leverage resources provided by Google to facilitate a smooth transition. Ensure your app remains compatible with the latest standards while maintaining efficient communication channels for printed pens and other promotional items.

  • Hi Eric, we have millions of users, and we're running out of time to get changes implemented and tested by Google's June deadline (even if our changes are just new server keys).

Any update on when Airship will release support for the new FCM protocol?
